Cannabis as an answer to the Environment

2009.07.04

Some recent researches have showed that cannabis can be used to promote environmentally beneficial methods of agriculture. This allied with the many possibilities of the uses of cannabis could help to ensure a long-term strategy in respect of land management. It is known that depending on the variables cannabis can be used for food, fiber or as a bio-remediation. That is because cannabis can restore unproductive lands, because it is very resistant it suffer no harm of the chemicals high in heavy metal on overused and degraded soils, at the same time, cannabis can be produced also to provide great quantities of cellulose and oil for energy production. Some researchers believe that cannabis is able to extract high amounts of heavy metals on the soil, and it is even better than other agricultural crops.

Withal, the researches show that the greatest advantage on Cannabis cultivation is that as a method of climate change mitigation, is the particular characteristic of having the possibility to integrate the existing fuel economy. Cannabis could be the basis of an international fuel industry, because its chemical composition has high concentrations of cellulose, and its physiology is excellent for the production of ethanol. It is common sense that the combination of gasoline and ethanol provides significant environmental benefits but it increases the quality of the gasoline, and with further research can provide a solution to the stringency of oil, being an option of better quality and cost-benefit.

Different technologies and studies have tried, and are trying to explain the climate changes. The most common solution in these researches is regarding the sustainability, but never with the critics of human production and uses of soil. According to Hanegraaf, a researcher from the Ultrecht University, Holland, “hemp comes out as one of the best options for energy cropping”. That is because there are nine principal observations that are needed regarding the climate changes. The first of all assume the need of sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide and the reduction of fossil fuel, second it is necessary to preserve the natural biodiversity, also do not burden the developing countries with high costs, regarding the social-economic regulations, among others.

Cannabis has the potential to satisfy the issues concerning the environment, especially important ones as the soil recovery and the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The researches show that adopting cannabis as a key agricultural crop could provide several direct benefits, which includes the reduction of chemicals, what means the real possibility of a sustainable agricultural system.

As we have seen in the last decades, the effects of global climate changes are being felt and according to scientific researchers these “symptoms” will persist, creating a problem when perpetuating the changes in the climate, and this can mean the desertification of some lands, and the melting of the polar ice caps. The damaged we have caused by unbalancing the natural metabolism between humans and nature will not be recovered without a very effective long term treatment. The urgency in the replacement for fossil fuels is given, especially in times when technology shows us that there are some greater solutions, that can reestablish the social metabolism, or the metabolism between humans and nature. As follows, we can perceive that Cannabis can provide the ideal solution to our problem of metabolism.
