HOW MUCH CANNABIS DOES THE WORLD GROW

According to the World drug report 2008 issued by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, Cannabis production was identified in 172 countries over the globe. The total Cannabis production between 2005 and 2006 was almost equal; nearing to 41,400 mt. Largest production of Cannabis was identified in America (55%) and in Africa (22%); other significant followers were Asia and Europe. Surprisingly, the Cannabis herb and Cannabis resin seizures have declined from 2004 to 2006, -27% and -30% respectively. Reason behind this was noted to be the ongoing increase in THC concentration of Cannabis, especially in the indoor specialized cultivation techniques. The average THC levels of Cannabis have doubled in USA from 4.6% in 1999 to 8.8% in 2006.

No one knows actual production of Cannabis

As per Executive Intelligence Review 2009, Cannabis is the highly abused drug in USA:

“There were about 520,000 hectares under cannabis cultivation in 2006, according to UNODC-or perhaps it was actually three times that amount…Yeild estimates also vary widely from 5 kg/ha (wild Cannabis) to 40,000kg/ha for hydroponic Cannabis cultivation”

Also, regarding Cannabis statistics, the Dept. of Justice states in its 2008 National Drug Threat Assessment (NDTA):

“No reliable estimates are available regarding the amount of domestically cultivated or processed marijuana (Cannabis). The amount of marijuana available—including marijuana produced both domestically and internationally—in the U.S. is unknown”

Thus, we only have limited statistics of Cannabis growth which is roughly figured out by the amount of Cannabis seizers and eradication.

THE CANNABIS MARKET STATUS

The sale of Cannabis has risen very much. Since 2000-2007 the global Cannabis market rose from 83% to 128%. The prices have gone down but the quantity has increased. As a result Cannabis has become the single largest component of the value of all potential drug sales, accounting for some $386 billion in potential sales in 2007(read more).

 CANNABIS CONSUMPTION STATISTICS

In the year 2007-2008 approximately 4.9% of world population (age 15-64years) has at least used drugs once. This equals to 208 million people. The problem drug use remains about 0.6% of global population in the said age group. Global annual prevalence rates of different drugs compared for 2006/07 over 2005/06 are:

Cannabis:  3.8 to 3.9%   (about 165.6 million people in age group 15-64years)

      Cocaine:  0.34 to 0.37%

      Opiates:  0.37 to 0.39%

      Heroine:  0.27 to 0.28%

      Amphetamines: 0.60 to 0.58%

In year 2006, Cannabis resins in European market were reported to have 2.3% to 18.4% THC concentration, and the herbal Cannabis had 1% to 13% THC. Life time prevalence of Cannabis in Europe is more than 70million people, which is 1 in every 5 people of age group 15-64years. Moreover, Cannabis use is more reported in 15-34year olds (31% of all in this age group), especially high among 15-24year olds. Males have a higher Cannabis consumption rate than females.

WHO states that Cannabis is the most widely cultivated, trafficked and abused illicit drug all over the world. About half of all drug seizures are Cannabis seizures. Cannabis is about five times more used than cocaine.

CANNABIS MORTALITY-MORBIDITY STATISTICS

In U.S., Oregon has the highest Cannabis consumption rates i.e. 30-40% higher than general U.S. population. There are a number of registered persons receiving Cannabis for different medicinal purposes. In a study done on those people the following results came out regarding morbidity/mortality and other issues. These statistics are supportive of medical Cannabis use.
