Is Cannabis Posted On The FDA Danger List
2009.05.03
The big question here is whether marijuana is classified as dangerous. There are so many studies out there, prior to about 2005 that indicate that there is no harmful effect from marijuana. In fact the studies often go so far as to say that pot users are more docile and offer less threat than those on accepted medications or alcohol.
Marijuana has been the target of all kinds of paranoia and has been the subject of many a witch- hunt by worked up citizens and government agencies alike, but still its use increases and it’s spreading all the time. Maybe the governments don’t like something that people can enjoy without the FDA or any other government agency’s say so.
Studies have emerged now about the harmful effects of THC, which is the active chemical in marijuana. According to a recent study at King’s College in London, THC can affect some patients causing paranoia by getting to the inferior frontal cortex which regulates paranoia. However, no one is sure as to whether this should be classified as an addiction or if it should be classified as a mental health issue.
Often, in many studies there is a political angle behind them, and it is that political agenda that dictates who gets the money for that study. This is not an uncommon practice in the medical field, as certain medications are tested, but it is now known that the protocols for those tests show a very forgiving attitude by the ones doing the testing.
The controversy that rages over marijuana will rage on forever, between those who advocate weed, (now, not just individuals, but entire countries), and those who are dead set against it, like the U.S., and now the U.K. who are actively looking to act on the results of the more negative studies and beef up enforcement and punishment.
It is also interesting to note, that no matter how hard they may try to stop marijuana, it always creeps up somewhere else, illustrating, like Prohibition that where there’s a will, there’s a way, it always interesting to me that in Detox Centers there have been more deaths and ill side effects attributed to FDA approved medications than to marijuana.
There is also the argument that because weed is an illegal substance, it is in the hands of criminals who will cut it with all sorts of substances to make it look or taste better. There is even ground glass added to it to give the weed more of sheen so that it looks more appealing to the eye.
So, wouldn’t the government be smarter to just legalize it and concentrate on the trade of the myriad of other, more harmful drugs that are out there, or do they just not want to do anything until they really do see that keeping it on the FDA Danger list does more harm than good? Maybe it’s time someone listened!
The deaths and health complications attributed to said medications then Marijuana wins that argument. When pot is compared to other illegal "recreational drugs" it is the lesser of two evils. On the other hand just because there isn't a line outside Drug Detox Clinics for those that smoke Marijuana doesn't mean users are totally out of the woods.
