SHOULD WE OR SHOULDN?T WE LEGALIZE CANNABIS

2009.04.03

The question whether cannabis should be legalized or not is not a new question. It’s been a question of constant debate. The debate though is two fold, should the pot be legalized just for medical uses or should it be legalized for this and for personal use as well.

The various sides of the debate vary as well. Some are pro legalizing for medical purposes, while against personal use. Others feel it should not be legalized in any form, then there are those pro full legalization.

The dispute as to whether marijuana really has a medical purpose is fast becoming a consensus that does it not only have a good use it has several medical uses. The research being done in this regarding is supportive of this fact.

Those who are resistant to the legalizing of weed for medical purposes argue that it does not have to be smoked in order for its medicinal qualities to be beneficial. In addition, they believe that only a small amount of the cannabis properties are of any benefit medically wide.

Although the opposition has made it quite clear as to their arguments so have those that are pro legalization. Organizations such as the “Patients out of Time” have steadily been gaining a strong voice as to their views. They have put a detailed effort into ensuring that the government recognizes the research that is being done into the medical aspects.

In respect to those wanting legalizing for personal recreational use the arguments are still a long way from being convincing.

Although the anti legalization groups concerning pot are still in the running for their opinions there are organizations such as “LEAP” that are being recognized as having a opinion worth listening to as well. This is most likely do to the fact that this group is made up retired and current law enforcement personnel who feel there are valid points to be made for legalizing cannabis. Their consensus is that if the weed were legalized and controlled by legislation then there would be far fewer problems regarding Police officers having to enforce the prohibition.

Another what they consider valid argument that the anti marijuana individuals will offer is the adverse effects of the pot on the user. In accordance to their theory, the side effects of using pot far out weigh the benefits. This is a point that is enthusiastically argued against by those individuals who are suffering from individual illnesses that have experienced the benefits first hand.  They against groups point out that weed has long-term effects on the brain and body, but so do many diseases and even significant pain.

Looking at it from both sides it must be said that there are some instances where the use of pot has been more detrimental than beneficial in some illnesses.

In the meantime, the businesses who sell the paraphernalia such as the roach clips, bubble bags and hash pipes will continue to prod along as many of them feel it is only a matter of time before the cannabis will be a legalized substance.
