The Flourishing Industry of Hemp
2010.04.27
It’s almost amusing to see how many individuals have absolutely no problem using products made from hemp yet the word cannabis surfaces and they are horrified. It’s not to say that the hemp enthusiasts are not aware of where hemp comes from. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t some great advantages to using hemp and it should most certainly be utilized wherever possible.
Most of the hemp advocates will make the statement that there would be no danger as far as getting high of off industrial hemp. This is based on the low THC content. Those that are highly involved in the use of industrial hemp will raise concerns about the bad name that cannabis has gotten for itself. They are worried that the products that are made from this type of hemp will be shunned because people will be worried about side effects.
This was not so much of an issue a few years back because there were many non-users of pot that had no idea that hemp was part of the marijuana plant. Now that weed is getting to be such a hot spot in the news media regarding it’s medicinally use there is awareness that is more public.
There is some talk about whether Hemp could be used as a feasible fuel replacement. This is an interesting concept even though corn has become the forerunner by making ethanol to replace fuel. The problem is the corn demands water for growth. A drought will no doubt damage the crop and could create a fuel shortage of its own. The cannabis plant grown for industrial hemp requires much less water, so in that sense it may very well a much better fuel source.
Even though the use of hemp for fuel is, being considered there are those anti pot users that fear that the runoff from the crop would contain THC, but the advocates say that with the low level of THC in the plant itself there are not major concerns, as it would have no effect.
It is coming to the point that those interested in industrial hemp are going to have more of a voice when it comes to promoting it and it’s by products. No doubt, the local governments will have to keep a keen eye on the status of hemp. They are not going to want to see major industrial users of the product run into difficulties of not making the sales. It could have quite an impact on the economy.
It’s not an issue that the government could or most likely would want to put on the back burner as it has done in the past with medical marijuana or legalizing pot. Naturally, it’s sort of a sort spot amongst these types of users, as it would seem that their problems and issues are of no consequence to the government.
